Spring
Week commencing 6th January
This week the children have been exploring space, we have shared the story ‘How to catch a star’ by Oliver Jeffers. The children have been very busy exploring the different planets, learning to count down, mark making their own rockets and playing with bubbles in the garden.
Week commencing 13th January
This week's theme was "Frozen," and we have been reading Rachel Elliot's "Be Brave Little Penguin." This week's topic was aided by the weather; we discovered ice in the tyres and investigated its appearance and feel. The children have been busy practicing their scissor skills, playing with the artic animals, investigating various shapes, and counting penguins in the sensory tray.
Week commencing 20th January
This week, everything related to transportation has been our focus! We have looked at the various modes of transportation, including air, sea, and land travel. Sharing William Bee's story "and the train goes..." has been enjoyable. The children have been constructing trains out of big boxes to travel to the seaside, playing with fire trucks, and digging the pasta in the sensory tray. The children also enjoyed using shapes that we had previous learnt, to make a bus in an art activity.
Week commencing 27th January and 3rd February
Over the past two weeks, the Nest has been exploring the world. The first stop was China, where the children celebrated Chinese New Year and read Lucy Cousins' "Maisie's New Year." Since this year is the year of the snake, they enjoyed making paper chain snakes. We have also been looking in the mirror whilst wearing animal masks for the various Chinese zodiac years, and using tweezers in the sensory tray to match the correct coloured pompoms into the appropriate bowl.
The children have also enjoy making their own shakers to use during our music time session, practising using them loud and quiet whilst we sing nursery rhymes together.
Our second destination was Africa, where we told the children Eileen Browne's story "Handa's Surprise." They had the opportunity to sample some of the fruits in the story and seemed to enjoy the taste of pineapple the most. Utilizing their fine motor skills to peel and adhere dots to elephants and giraffes pictures and playing with wild animals that you might see on an African safari.
Our last destination was Italy, where the children have been creating their own pizzas to share with their families at home. Rolling out their dough and spreading the sauce before adding their preferred toppings and cheese, they were incredible chefs. Miss Crane is very proud of them!
