The Read, Write ,Inc programme was implemented in March 2013 in order to improve phonics, spelling, reading and writing across the whole school.
Miss Chandler took over as the 'reading manager' in September 2013 and is overseeing the whole programme from assessment to teaching within the groups as well as maintaining her regular teaching role as Year One class teacher.
In the Read,Write,Inc programme children are taught by ability and not by age group and lessons are delivered by fully trained staff, four days a week. Each morning between 9:15 and 10:15 children from Foundation 2 to Year 2 are split into different groups in order to teach them to: read, spell, practice handwriting and write sentences in different contexts. This is linked well to the new curriculum (started in September 2014) and children are making great progress and continuous assessments mean that children's individual needs are met as they progress at their own rate and not necessarily that of the group.
Children bring a RWI book home each Monday, which is the book that they have read in their previous RWI week sessions and they keep it until the Friday of the same week. Children should be able to read this to parents independently, gaining practice, confidence and fluency.
