Mystery and Suspense

In this exciting unit we will be using the amazing novel 'The Watertower' by Gary Crew and 'The Boy in the Tower' by Polly Ho-Yen to help us write our own mystery stories. The children will learn to

  • Read for detail
  • Examine passages for the technique of suspense
  • Think critically about clues the author leaves in a story to create suspense
  • Understand the way in which suspense can keep the reader engaged

The WaterTower by Gary Crew

A decent reading of the haunting Graphic Novel by Gary Crew (not as good as Mr Mallick reads it!)

Reading Buddies!

As part of a whole school focus on reading, we have been taking part in a wide range of activities to support our appreciation and understanding of the written word. We have weekly reading assemblies, daily independent and guided reading sessions, whole class reading activities, reading days and many more. This week we had a chance to read with our friends and siblings in Year 2 and give them the benefit of our reading expertise. Everyone involved had a great time.

Vocabulary Building

At the moment we are using poetic forms to build our vocabulary. We will be exploring word choice and order to create effect as well as looking at metaphor and simile to create appropriate images. We will proof reading, improving and performing our poems which will be based on the video below.

Iguana vs Snakes | Planet Earth II

This behaviour has never been filmed before! Hatchling marine iguanas are attacked by snakes hunting on mass. This clip was taken from the Islands episode of Planet Earth II.
