On Monday you are introduced to expanded column subtraction.  I wouldn’t necessary teach this particularly method but it is helpful in seeing what is going on when you subtract a smaller 3-digit number from a larger one.  This is how I would work out the example given.

It is doing exacting the same by ‘borrowing’ a ten and combing it with the two ones to make twelve.
