Spellings & Grammar

Here is a snapshot of the weekly spelling lessons.  The spellings introduced will be practised the following week.

15.11.2024 - Prefixes ‘in-’, ‘il-’, ‘im-’ and ‘ir-’

Prefixes are a group of letters that change the meaning of a word when they are added to the start.   For further practise I suggest you work through the different activities on the BBC Bitesize webpage:

What are prefixes?

08.11.2024 - this week in our English lessons we have been focusing on conjunctions.

The following websites explain what a conjunction is and how they are used.

What are coordinating conjunctions?

What are subordinating conjunctions?

Using conjunctions to build sentences

18.10.2024 - possessive apostrophe with singular proper nouns ending with s

This is building on last week's input.  The apostrophe comes after the s when a proper noun ends in an s.

Jed's bicycle is very dirty.

Agnes' football is a birthday present.

11.10.2024 - Possessive apostrophe with singular proper nouns

Proper nouns are the names of a particular person, place or thing. They always begin with a capital letter.  An apostrophe can be used to show something belongs to someone.

Mr Chandler's iPad has run out of charge.

Sam's pencil needs sharpening.

This BBC website - How to use possessive apostrophes - is an excellent introduction in how to use possessive apostrophes.  It is goes on to long at them being used for plural nouns.

04.10.2024 - Homophones (peace/piece, main/mane, fair/fare)

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. They also have different spellings.

This BBC Bitesize webpage has a range of homophone activities that will reinforce the children's learning.

27.09.2024 Words ending /ʒə/
