Summer Term
May 2025
May has been a busy month in Reception!
We are Artists! We have been thinking about the question, ‘How can I make my mark?’. We enjoyed exploring different ways to make marks such as long and short lines, thick and thin lines and straight and curvy lines, as well as different mark making tools such as crayons, chalk, felt tips and pencils. We completed some observational drawings of different objects such as fruit, shells and flowers. We learnt that we needed to look closely and carefully.
This week we completed our final masterpieces - a self portrait! We looked carefully at our faces to notice the different features before getting creative and drawing ourselves. We chose if we wanted to use realistic, or unrealistic colours in our self-portrait. Our final self-portraits were fantastic!
We are Musicians! We have been busy exploring what an instrument is, the parts of an orchestra, keeping in time with different beats before exploring some musical instruments of our own. Our favourites were the (ever so slightly squeaky!) recorders, piano and the drums. It was very loud but we had lots of fun! We also created some fantastic musical instruments of our own including guitars and shakers using recycled materials.
Week commencing 28th April
We have started the summer term thinking about the question, ‘I wonder what’s living in the garden?’. We firstly explored different items and decided if they were living or non-living, such as plants, minibeasts, cars and bubbles. We moved on to exploring plants. We learnt what the different parts of a plant are called, and the job of each of the parts. We enjoyed exploring different flowers and identifying the different parts we could see. On Friday we thought about seeds, and what they need to grow. We worked together to identify that they needed soil, water, sunlight and time for them to grow, before planting our own seeds.
In our Literacy lessons we have been exploring the book, The Bog Baby. We were given a character description of the Bog Baby and used play dough and loose parts to create our own - without actually seeing the book!
In Maths we have been practising counting larger quantities. We have explored how to count things that can be moved, and thing that cannot be moved. We learnt different strategies to help us to count.
