The adventures of …

As you may have read on the Hollybush website, there has been much excitement among our Hollybush Young Farmers, following Finley Cakebread finding a stick on the farm! Whilst this sounds like a fairly ordinary event, this stick has since become a character in a story written by a Church Farm co-farmer. These daily extracts, currently uploaded onto our website, are being written as part of May’s National Walking month, raising awareness of Mental Health. Rumour has it, the farm may even publish!

Since this caused such a stir in a recent school assembly, we have decided to launch a school writing competition in collaboration with Leaf café, Hertford. Two prizes can be won in each of the four following categories:

Foundation 2

Year 1 and 2

Year 3 and 4

Year 5 and 6

The success criteria is as follows:

Children should use an inanimate object such as a stone, a stick, a shell etc to create a character. Where do they go? Who do they meet? What did they learn?

Years 3-6: Your character must have at least 10 short adventures. There might be a moral to the story. It could be an ongoing story or just 10 short extracts as in a diary, perhaps similar to things you may have done during your half term. Consider how the character has developed over their journeys.

F2 – yr2: The character should have at least 5 adventures. Write a short story for each day to say where they have been. It could be things you have done such as adventures with Billy Bear in Year 1, or it could come entirely from your imagination.

Half term would be a great time to start these adventures. Encourage your child to be creative, imaginative and illustrations and drawings to go along with each adventure would be even better.

To allow plenty of time, the deadline for this competition will be 30th June.
